Millbrae Recreation Center Celebrates Grand Opening

In 2016, the City of Millbrae (City) lost its recreation center in a fire. Community programs once held at the center were scattered across the city and squeezed into places. The community gathered forces and fundraising began in earnest to build a new recreation center. In 2019, the City enlisted a local consultant to put together Criteria Documents for the new building and the City put the project out as a design build project. The design build project was put out to bid March 2020 and awarded Swinerton Management & Consulting (SMC) as the Construction Manager.

The Recreation Center is a 24,000 square-foot facility and hosts a fitness center that opens its exterior folding storefront doors to a large patio for extended outdoor classes, two preschool classrooms with its own play yard, an art center, a senior lounger, a teen game room, classrooms with flexibility to reduce in size or open the dividing operable partition wall to increase the classrooms’ audience. The Great Hall contains a large community room capable of holding over 300 guests with an adjoining commercial grade kitchen. The Great Hall is ideal for community events and special events. The Terrace off the Great Hall is bordered by a large terrace with outdoor seating, fire pit and pathways that connect the new building to the central paseo with the outdoor amenities and central park which borders the center on the South side.

The new recreation center is an all-electric Net Zero facility with sufficient solar panels to be installed by Peninsula Clean Energy to provide all power required for the center and features seven EV charging stations at the parking lot. Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) a large-scale, prefabricated, sold engineered wood panel system that is lightweight and provides superior acoustic, fire, seismic and thermal performance. Use of CLT to frame the main roof as well as
the structure between floors provided a faster installation as well as generating little to no waste onsite. This energy efficient facility will house the community of Millbrae and host special events many years to come.
