Hotel Del Coronado Recognized With Two Preservation Awards

Hotel Del Coronado, a project of Swinerton Management & Consulting (SMC) and the San Diego division, was presented with two preservation awards this year.  The hotel is a National Historic Landmark that defines the City of San Diego’s heritage. The Victorian-era building is one of the nation’s largest wooden buildings and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1977. It was featured in the 1959 film Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe.

The first was awarded by Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) for the Preservation Project of the Year Award .  The second award came from the California Preservation Foundation (Foundation) for a 2022 Preservation Design Award in the Preservation or Restoration category.

Preservation Project Of The Year From SOHO

The award celebrates the restoration of the hotel’s Queen Anne Victorian style. The main façade was brought back to its original 1888 appearance, including twin entry staircases that had been missing, upper balconies, and gingerbread detailing. Features of the hotel like wooden railings were brought up to code – the originals were too short. In addition, 114 wood-framed windows, 25 of which are stained glass, were replicated. This was no easy feat, as 21 out of the 25 stained glass windows were missing and all 114 windows were not part of the master plan. The 700-piece historic Coronation window was also restored. The jury selects projects that have furthered, to a notable degree, the purposes of the profession, consistent with the California Preservation Foundation’s mission.”
