Chabot College’s Library Project Recognized For Outstanding Achievement
The Chabot College Library and Learning Connection Center has been honored with the 2025 Project Achievement Award from the CMAA Northern California Chapter in the “Buildings – Between $50M–$99M” category. This recognition underscores the project’s exceptional delivery, innovative design, and the collaborative spirit that defined its execution. Swinerton Management & Consulting (SMC), served as the construction manager and played a pivotal role in guiding the project from pre-design through post-occupancy, ensuring that the facility not only met but exceeded the expectations of Chabot-Las Positas Community College District (CLPCCD) and its stakeholders.
Project Details
Spanning 62,000 square feet across four stories, the new Library and Learning Connection Center stands as a state-of-the-art academic and cultural hub at the heart of Chabot College. The facility features modern classrooms, computer labs, quiet study rooms, a meditation area, a social stair, and a cultural literacy room – all designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and support diverse learning styles. The building’s innovative architecture, including a central atrium and asymmetrical floor design, required intricate coordination and advanced BIM integration, reflecting SMC’s commitment to delivering industry leading solutions.
Building a Collaborative Atmosphere
SMC’s relationship with the client was defined by a culture of shared governance and transparent communication. Regular stakeholder meetings ensured that the voices of faculty, classified professionals, students, and administration were incorporated throughout the design and construction process. This inclusive approach, combined with proactive problem-solving – such as sourcing a temporary transformer to overcome pandemic-related supply chain delays – demonstrated SMC’s agility and dedication to client satisfaction.
The project’s successful completion, on time and within budget, resulted in a LEED Gold-certified facility that sets a new benchmark for sustainability and educational excellence.
