Swinerton Management & Consulting (SMC) has achieved SITES™ (Sustainable Sites Initiative) Two-Star certification at the San Francisco Boeddeker Park for the Trust for Public Land. SITES is a green rating system designed to define sustainable sites, measure their performance, and elevate the value of landscapes. SITES-certified projects benefit the environment, property owners, local and regional communities, and economies. The program started in 2006 as a collaborative effort between the Wildflower Center, United States Botanic Garden, American Society of Landscape Architects, and USGBC; there are currently 47-certified projects nationwide.
Boeddeker Park is a one-acre oasis situated in the middle of the Tenderloin. What was once an undesirable, unsafe area for 50,000 nearby residents is now an inviting space that is open daily. The pocket park includes a state-of-the-art clubhouse, walking path, adult fitness equipment, children’s play area, lawn and plazas for community gatherings, and a garden. Project partners conducted extensive community outreach at nearby senior and youth centers and various facilities, and worked closely with local community partners to ensure a safe park that provides programs and activities for all ages. The result is a model of civic engagement, inspiration, resource conservation, and adaptability.
