Cañada College Kinesiology And Wellness Building Named Best Of The Best By ENR

Engineering News-Record (ENR) recently announced the nationwide Best of the Best Project winners in the United States. Selected from more than 800 entries in March, Swinerton Management & Consulting’s (SMC) Cañada College Kinesiology and Wellness Building was named Best of the Best Project 2021 in the Excellence in Safety category.

Excellence In Safety Winner

Last Fall, SMC’s Cañada College Kinesiology and Wellness Building project was nominated for a regional ENR California 2021 Best Projects Award. The project won not one, but two awards—an Award of Merit in the Higher Education/Research category and the Excellence in Safety Award—both in the Northern California region. A new set of 15 judges was selected to review the regional winners at the national level. Two of them were industry safety experts who reviewed the incident rates, worker hours, and safety programs to determine the top Excellence in Safety winner.

Because the Cañada College Kinesiology and Wellness Building project site was spread across an extremely active, multi-elevation campus with restricted access in a wildland-urban interface, several customized initiatives and additional safeguards were added to ensure the wellbeing of everyone exposed to construction. The result was no OSHA Recordable Incident or Lost Time Accident Rates, 442,515 total worker hours on the job, and a rigorous, already award-winning safety program that achieved an impressive .38 Experience Modification Rate. The Project Team of Swinerton Management & Consulting, Blach Construction, and the San Mateo Community College District received the SEWUP Safety Recognition Award for Outstanding Safety Performance on the jobsite.

Given the efforts and dedication of the collective project team, it is no wonder that the Cañada College Kinesiology and Wellness Building received both regional and national recognition.
