Renovated Gardiner Park Re-opens to South San Francisco Community

The newly renovated Gardiner Park opened to the public on Tuesday, October 27, just in time for the City of South San Francisco’s re-opening of outdoor parks previously closed due to the coronavirus pandemic emergency order. The grand re-opening was safely celebrated with a small group of Councilmembers, Parks and Recreation Commissioners, city staff, and neighbors.

“The reopening of this park is perfect timing as children are still at home distance learning, but need somewhere to go to burn off energy and get some time outdoors,” said Mayor Richard Garbarino.

Work included modern play equipment with rubberized safety surfacing, a resurfaced basketball court and new adjustable hoop, reconfigured retaining walls, and pathways to increase the play area, drinking fountain with bottle filler, and drought-tolerant landscaping including the installation of a new high-efficiency drip irrigation system.

SMC provided construction management services for the city’s $1.1 million park project, which was completed within a ten-month period and in compliance with COVID-19 orders by the County of San Mateo’s Health Officer. SMC continues to be a trusted partner of the city, managing various municipal engineering projects for over seven years.
